Arrests after Pool’s Bolton clash

Monday, November 29th, 2010

VIOLENCE after the game marred Blackpool FC’s game at Bolton on Saturday.

Trouble flared at Bolton Train Station with fans reporting sporadic outbursts of violence between the home supporters and the visitors, who were waiting for trains back to the resort after the 2-2 draw.

In all, police reported three arrests and nine supporters ejected from Bolton’s Reebok Stadium during the game, but said the afternoon passed off otherwise peacefully.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “There were three arrests during the match, two of which were Bolton fans and the other a Blackpool fan.

“We ejected nine fans from the ground – six fans from Blackpool and three from Bolton.

“There were no incidents of significance.”

Tensions have been rife between the two teams since back 1974 when 17-year-old Blackpool fan Kevin Olsson was stabbed to death on the Spion Kop at Bloomfield Road during a game against the Trotters.

Spartak Moscow - Marseille (23.11.2010)

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

Spartak’s Champions League dream is over – and fans of the Red-and-Whites were quick to show their fury.

Already disgruntled after a humiliating derby day loss to 10-man CSKA, a 3-0 hammering at home to Marseille was the final straw for many.

Long before the final whistle supporters were streaming out of Luzhniki, throwing their scarves aside in disgust.

While stewards – who are supplied by the Spartak supporters’ club – tried to persuade them to stay and encourage their team to an unlikely comeback, a banner (pictured above) was unfurled reading: “Your gutlessness will become legendary!”

And more than 100 fans were arrested after disturbances between stewards and fleeing fans when Marseille scored their second goal, Komsomolskaya Pravda reported.

Police chief Vyacheslav Khaustov told the tabloid that the arrests were mostly for drunkenness, hooliganism, attempting to bring fireworks into the stadium and ticket touting.

Sticks seized from Real Madrid fans

SPANISH police seized a bag containing 19 sticks that a group of Real Madrid fans tried to check in on a flight to Amsterdam.

Police say the fans intended to use them in fights with Ajax fans before Tuesday’s Champions League match.

Officers identified the man who tried to check in the bag at Madrid’s Barajas airport, as well as those who he was traveling with as members of Real Madrid’s radical Ultra Sur fan movement.

Police commended for bravery in violence at Portsmouth FA Cup tie

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

FIVE Southampton supporters accused of being part of ugly scenes after the fifth round FA Cup tie with arch rivals Portsmouth have all been dramatically cleared.

Jurors found the final three defendants not guilty of violent disorder after charges against two other men were dropped during the trial.

After the verdicts, Judge Gary Burrell QC took the rare step of asking a sixth defendant, Peter Smithson, 36, whether he wanted to change his plea.

The self-employed electrician, pictured right, of Adams Close, Hedge End, had pleaded guilty to violent disorder at the start of the 13-day trial but yesterday admitted the lesser charge of affray.

Aston Villa v Birmingham City derby

Saturday, November 20th, 2010

POLICE hunting soccer thugs involved in ugly scenes of violence after the second city derby today released images of men they want to trace.

Rival fans clashed outside Villa park after the final whistle of the 0-0 draw between Aston Villa and Birmingham City on October 31.

A total of seven people were arrested on the day.

But after scouring video footage of the skirmish, officers from West Midlands Police Football Unit have issued images of nine men and called on Birmingham Mail readers to name them.

During the violent scenes in outside Aston Hall, in Witton Lane, a number of police officers were injured as they came under a barrage of missiles thrown from the mob.

One officer narrowly avoided losing the sight in one eye after being hit on the cheek by a coin.

Police want to question the men on suspicion of violent disorder.

Two of the men are believed to be Blues fans and the remaining seven are thought to be linked to Aston Villa.
