New film about ultras, coming up

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

The film is called “Secondo Tempo”(Second half) and it is directed by Fabio Bastanello. The story is apparently very simple: a cop infiltrated amongst fans of AC Torino in order to try to prevent football violence. A fact that could make the film even more interesting is that it will be shot in only one scene of 105 minutes  long. One terrace, no cuts, no stunts, no doubles, just ULTRAS…

Delije - Red Star supporters

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Sports Club Red Star was founded on March 4, 1945, as a result of Belgrade youth’s effort to establish a sport club which they will be dedicated to. At the very beginning, there was made a section of members-friends of SC Red Star which had about 100 faithful supporters of red-whites who started to go with the club on all away games. The section was mostly made of boys from the burjoise parts of the city - Senyak, Topcider Hill, Dedinye, Knez Mihaylova st., but amongst the first Red Star supporters there were also children of workers, who will form the ‘first team’ of supporters leaders in future period. All these guys had something special, because they represented the very soul of our capital.
Mostly they were city rough guys and bohems - all in all young Belgradians who did not like nor army nor communist system, which has already began to rot.

A history of the ultra movement

Monday, April 19th, 2010

The first groups of ‘ultras’, football supporters between the ages of 15 and 25 who clearly differed from the classic model of the adult football spectator, appeared in Italy around the end of the ’sixties and early ’seventies. Gathered in the cheaper sectors of stadiums, attracted by clubs through special reduced price subscription campaigns, the ultras immediately displayed a series of unique characteristics totally new to Italian football. These ranged from a marked sense of identification with their own particular “territory”, meaning a sector of terrace marked out by banners with the group’s name or symbol, to a paramilitary look taken from the one in vogue with a number of extremist political organizations of the time: parka, Dr. Martens boots, camouflage combat suits and jackets worn under scarves with the colors of their clubs.

The ultra movement and the political influences

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Here in Italy the situation is becoming very hard. I am fed up with hearing insults from our rivals every Sunday and, as time goes by, the situation worsens”

Abedi Pele, footballer from Ghana, in April 1996.

Facing the problem of racism in Italian stadiums means going over the history of curve support (the “ultra” support based on the terraces), to understand both the dynamics that enabled racism and right-wing extremism to spread and the intervention strategies necessary to combat it.

Interview with the editor of Polish magazine “To my kibice”

Monday, April 19th, 2010

1 - Tell us something about yourself
My name is Piotr Jaworski, I`m 29 years old. I`m an ultra of GKS Belchatow, member of “GNF`03″ group. Since 4 years I`m also an editor of “To My Kibice” magazine.

2- How did you came up with the idea of making a magazine about all the Polish fanatics?
Since 1996 I have edited some black and white fanzines like “GieKaeSiak” (for my group) and “Polish Ultras-Pride of Poland“. But always my dream was to build a full colour magazine about polish ultra&hooligan scene. I was inspired by “Supertifo”, “3.Felido”, “KOP” and “Tifo Support Skandinavien”-magazines from other countries. It`s sad, that 3 of these magazines are not edited anymore…

Interview with a GKS Katowice mate

Monday, April 19th, 2010

US - Please introduce yourself…

- I’m Witek, 22 years old, former ultras of GKS Katowice, now organizer of selling gadgets, member of the GSK Katowice fans association.

US -What attracted you towards organized football support?
- My father took me to see GKS games when I was a kid. The beginning was an accident, when I helped to prepare a ultra’ show. In a winter our club invited us to come and help clean the pitch of snow. I had some free hours so I went there where I met guys from the ultras organization which invited me with them to prepare the show for the match against Ruch.

Kohorta Osijek (Croatia)

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Following FC Osijek promotion to first division in ex-Yugoslavia, our stadium, «Gradski Vrt», became filled and slowly Osijek had more and more noisy supporters. From 1972 ’till 1978 our group had the name «ŠOKCI», in 1986 we named ourselves «TORCIDA OSIJEK» (like the oldest and most famous supporters then, Torcida Split). But in 1988, the group agreed to take an unique name and we chose KOHORTA. The term Kohorta is in fact Latin word Cohorts which has two meanings. First is that Cohorts is a tactical infantry unit, 1/10 of the Roman Legions. In the time of Roman emperors, Cohorts had 400-600 people and it was gathered in town. Second version of that name is that Kohorta means strongly bonded group of people.

The history of Komiti ( Vardar Skopje)

Monday, April 19th, 2010

The Ultras group “KOMITI” was noticed for the first time in the year 1985, on “Zapad” (Macedonian = West Stand), where the most fanatic fans of Vardar always operated, at the game FK Vardar Skopje - FC Porto (0:3). Two years later, in God’s summer of 4th June 1987 in the City Stadium in Skopje was the Derby of the Yugoslav league at that time between FK Vardar Skopje and Red Star Belgrade(3:1). On “Zapad” for the first time since existence of the club a banner with the writing “KOMITI” was noticed. The idea contained the establishment of a massive and strong Macedonian ultra scene. Our goal was that”KOMITI” will make the prominent post of all activities and events on the West Stand. As the most acceptable name of the group was selected “KOMITI” .

The reason for it was simple: When Macedonia was in the Middle Ages under occupation suffered by the Osmans, young Macedonians under the name “KOMITI” had organized themselves, in order to fight against the Tyranne and to drive it out from Macedonia.

HNK Rijeka vs. HNK Hajduk Split, 18.02.06

Monday, April 19th, 2010

The Croatian adria-derby, in the impressive Kantrida-stadium (situated straight between some heavy rocks just some steps in front of the open sea), in Rijeka. About 8 000 people came to see the first regular match after the winter break and the former German national team player, Fredi Bobic, who was unemployed since the end of last season and just signed a contract with Rijeka for the next 6 months. His mother is Croat and the club, which is 2nd in the table, put him in the squad to gather more public interest. In contrast to Rijeka, Hajduk had a disastrous season so far, it is doubtful they will reach the play-off-cut (6th place) in the table. After last weeks home-loss to arch-rival Dinamo Zagreb in the postponed derby from December, the board fired the third coach in just 18 games.

My scarf

Monday, April 19th, 2010

How can you explain something like this? I think and I wonder… It is hard to find your words. How can you make someone who hasn’t a clue to understand something that for you is so important. Because this article is dedicated to those who don’t have a clue. To those quiet spectators, to those journalists, to those parents, to those girlfriends, to the majority. To those people who don’t understand us.

I will try to make a short history of this tifo item. As it would be expected, the first scarves appeared in England. Made of thick wool, under the form of simple big stripes, with the colors of the team. Then, with the birth of organized supporters in Italy, scarves and the way they were used (stretched above the head) were also present in Italy. Of course, like it always happens, things evolve. Different way of using the scarf appeared(you know how…). But the most spectacular change was made by their color and their form.. Today we meet very long or very wide scarves, or tiny ones. They are made of a variety of fabrics: wool, polyester, cotton. They use a lot of colors, not to talk about the many badges and symbols. Today they make very specialized scarves: to show your attachment towards the club, towards a player, to express your hate for a club or for a group of rival supporters. Or to commemorate a special day or a hero.
