New BBC documentary about football fans

While many football fans around the world will be avidly debating and agonising over the fates of their national teams in June, it is often at the domestic club level where the game finds its most passionate support. A new series, The Power and the Passion, on BBC World Service from Monday 07 June 2010 explores this phenomenon. Writer and broadcaster David Goldblatt travels to four very different football games in Italy, Egypt, Ghana and the UK, to experience the build-up and pitch action from the perspective of the fans.

Fans take over lease of Chester City’s Deva Stadium

Chester City
Fans of Chester City have been given the lease to the club’s stadium by their local council, prompting hopes of a revival.
Cheshire West and Chester Council has offered Chester Fans United (CFU) a five-year lease to the Deva Stadium.
The authority rejected a proposal from a Danish consortium.
Chester City was wound up in the High Court in March, after being expelled from the Conference in February for failing to play games due to debts.
They plan to start life again as Chester Football Club in August, playing in a lower league.
CFU, which had pledged to maintain league football in the city, said they were “delighted” with the decision. (more…)
