
It was in 1995 on this day in soccer history that Genoa supporter Vincenzo Claudio Spagnolo was stabbed and killed by an A.C. Milan outside the Marassi stadium. The incident sparked rioting among fans of the rival teams and forced the game was called at halftime.
The death was the first soccer related death in Italy since 1988 and drew renewed attention to violence in the stands and outside stadia in Italy. The police were ready for the replay calling in 600 riot police officers.
